Bird blogs 3 in 1

These birds I am going to talk to you about have unique ways of catching there prey
    The first one is a . . .
Great blue heron
Identification: The Great blue heron is the largest heron in North America. It is about 45 to 50 ". Its body is bluish-grayish and its lore is green ( a lore is on both sides of the birds face it comes either between the birds eyes and the upper base of the beak on a snake it is between its eyes and nostrils).

Habitat: They live anywhere near marshes, streams, and by the water side. The only thing I don't understand is why would a Great blue heron want to live on my school roof and really there was a great blue heron on my school roof.

Nesting: They nest in colonies and usually away from predators in the woodlands. The female lays 3 to 5 eggs There is a waiting for about 28 days for the eggs to hatch. When they are born in the morning the male takes care of the baby and the female hunts and at night it is reversed.

It catches its prey by acting like a statue, then when its prey comes near it stabs it with its razor sharp bill,
pretty cool huh ?

2. Peregrine Falcon
Identification:  The Peregrine Falcon like many other hawks and Falcons has black spots on its chest.  Its body length is about 13-23 inches its wingspan is 31-47 inches It has a bluish-grayish back. It is also known as the duck hawk for some reason, I mean ducks don't seem as vicious as falcons. Females are actually larger than the males. Males weigh 424-750 grams and females weigh 910-1,500 grams. It has a yellow beak which has black on the front. The Peregrines feet are yellow.

Habitat: It breeds on the Arctic tundra and can be found anywhere in earth except for the poles. It usually lives in very high mountains or tropical forests The only place it doesn't live in that is ice-free is New Zealand. It is now starting to live in urban cities.

What does the Peregrine Falcon eat ? Well it usually eats medium sized birds such as pigeons, doves, waterfowl, and songbirds. It also eats one of the smallest raptors in the world, the American Kestrel( it is 9 in. and it has a 22 inch wingspan).

Its way of  catching prey is it dives at about 200 mph and darts for its prey. Diving at 200 mph makes it  the fastest bird in the world it is also the fastest animal in the world.

Pied Billed grebe

Identification: It is a small, stocky, brown bird with a white bill and a black band around it. It is 12-15 in. and has a wing span of 18 -24 in. It is the only grebe that does not show a white wing patch while flying

What does it eat? It eats aquatic invertebrates and also eats small fish and amphibians It eats its feathers to digest and prevent from chocking

Habitat: It is the most widespread North american grebe it is found on ponds, marshes, and lakes. It rarely is found on salt water.

The Pied billed grebe dives down really fast when it sees prey under the water this gives it the name water witch or Hell diver.

Those were the three birds I was going to talk to you about.
