The Brown Pelican
I know, I know your going to ask me why I have not been bird blogging in so long. Well, I guess I just totally forgot about it and started writing other interesting stories. Anyways lets get onto the facts about this amazing bird. Guess what it is. If you guessed Brown Pelican your right! So, the reason I am talking about this specific pelican is because I saw at least two in San Fransisco. Now this magnificent pelican may not be as big as the American white pelican but it sure is cool.
This bird is (at breeding times) a brownish grayish color on its body and a bright red or black neck. Its head is yellowish and whitish and it has a white and black beak that contrast. So these pelicans get there food by plunging into the shallow water. Doing that stuns the fish and they automatically go into the pelicans mouth. Pretty smart, eh?
These amazing birds live along the coast. So if your planning to go to San fransisco or the bay be sure to take a camera, because you will see this bird. Fun fact! Did you know that the oldest brown pelican lived for 43 years! That's about as long as Mozart did!
Imagine a world with no brown pelicans what so ever. Well, thats exactly what happened in the 20th century, when pesticides nearly made this bird go extinct! but then after a few years the bird started making a recovery because the use of pesticides decreased. The pesticides made the birds eggs so thin that they would crack immediately, but you don't need to worry because the brown pelican is now really common and those pesticides haven't been use in a long time.
Anyways that is a really interesting bird, eh?!
